Kyocera Ecosys M6235cidn Review: Worth the splurge | Professionals

The busy working group is looking for the main laser multifunction machine, no need to wait and see. Kyocera’s Ecosys M6235cidn is designed for huge work cycles, citing up to 100,000 pages per month.

It is also very cost-effective. The ceramic print drum and developer are designed to extend the life of the MFP, so toner is the only consumable. You will find a 6,000-page black and 5,000-page color ink cartridge in the box. After that, Kyocera’s high-capacity black ink cartridge can print 13,000 pages, and the color ink cartridge can print 11,000 pages. This makes 1p per single page and 5.4p in color very reasonable.

M6235cidn is a versatile creature, thanks to Kyocera's HyPAS (Advanced Solutions Hybrid Platform) application library. There are many options to choose from, including applications for access control and document management. Unfortunately, due to changes in security policies, some cloud applications are being discontinued, including Cloud Direct for Dropbox and Google Drive, so this may not be an ideal MFP for teams that invest a lot of money in the cloud.

Happily, mobile devices are getting better deals. Kyocera's mobile printing application can still be used with Dropbox, Evernote and OneDrive, while the MyPanel application can remotely send scans directly to e-mail once you provide the mail server details in the MFP's web console.

You can also find security features in the web console, which include controls for printing, scanning, and copying operations, color usage, and page restrictions. Users must enter their ID number in the printer driver to access these features; they can also set a PIN to keep confidential jobs until they are manually released, or use the print and hold feature to check individual printouts before releasing more copies.

Thanks to the M6235cidn's large 7-inch color touch screen, all types of walking operations are a pleasure. The menu layout can be easily customized from the web console and can hold up to 40 icons. You can easily set shortcuts for almost any task.

In use, M6235cidn can quickly complete large print jobs. The engine has a rated speed of 35 ppm, and our 35-page Word document really only takes one minute to print at the default resolution of 600dpi. The printer also offers a true 1,200dpi mode, but we found that this reduces the printing speed to 13.5ppm. Similarly, our 24-page color DTP document appeared at 35ppm at 600dpi, but dropped to 10ppm at higher resolutions.

Still, this should not be a deal breaker: in the default settings, Kyocera offers excellent output quality, clear text as low as 6pt fonts, and highly detailed monochrome photos with a lot of detail.

Its color is just as good. Our test chart shows that there is no obvious step in the complex color fading, and the composite gray shade looks very clean and neutral. In the real world, even on cheap 75gsm copy paper, this can be transformed into compelling photos, reports, and marketing materials.

If you are going to buy M6235cidn, please note that you may need to price some optional additional features. The printer is equipped with only one 250-sheet tray; up to three additional 500-sheet trays can be added, but each will cost £150. If you want to connect to a wireless network, you also need Kyocera’s IB-51 802.11n expansion card, which will cost you £250.

Even so, Ecosys M6235cidn is still a very powerful competitor for small and medium enterprises that require fast printing speed and excellent access security. Its large touch screen is very user-friendly, the print quality is excellent, and the running cost is the lowest you find in a commercial laser multifunction machine.
